Categories

Group products into collections and sub-collections, reorder them by dragging.

On this page

Categories (collections) group your products so customers can browse by section — "Dresses", "Shoes", "Accessories". A collection can have sub-collections one level deep: "Shoes › Sneakers".

  • Top-level collections appear in your shop's collections menu.
  • Sub-collections sit inside one collection. They can't have sub-collections of their own.
  • Customers see collections in the same order as this list.

Create a category

  1. Press New category.
  2. Enter the Name.
  3. Leave Inside collection at Top level for a collection, or pick one to make this a sub-collection.
  4. Optionally write a Description — shown above the products when customers open the category.
  5. Optionally add a Cover photo — a wide photo, up to 4 MB, used when the collection is featured on the home page.
  6. Press Create category.

Reorder by dragging

On the Categories page, grab a row and drag it:

  • up or down to change the order,
  • onto another collection to make it a sub-collection there,
  • out to the top level to make it a collection of its own.

The new order saves by itself — you see Order saved. next to the search box.

The outline shows 20 top-level collections a page, each with all its sub-collections; the page numbers under it move between pages (… lets you type any page number). You drag within the page you are on, and the search box looks through that page.

Have a long list? Type in Find a collection… to jump to one.

Visibility and the home page

  • Visible in shop — switch off to take the collection out of your shop's navigation without deleting it.
  • Feature on the home page — shows the collection as a photo tile on your home page (when Featured collections is on in Design → Home page). Give it a cover photo so the tile looks good.

Products without a category

Under the list you see how many products have no collection yet; press it to go to the product list. Assign a category on each product's edit page, or for many at once with Excel import.

Delete and restore

Deleting a category keeps its products — they show as uncategorised until you restore it or give them another one. Its sub-collections move up and become top-level collections.

Deleted collections are listed under Deleted collections at the bottom of the page, each with a Restore button. A restored collection comes back hidden at the end of its level; switch on Visible in shop when it is ready.
